Tragic Fire in Hamar: Four Girls Aged 18–19 Lose Their Lives

Hamar, September 10, 2025 – Early in the morning, around 5:00 a.m., a dramatic fire broke out in the center of Hamar, claiming the lives of four young women. The victims were Ida Bæk Nordland (19), Astrid Støe Valla (18), Ester Moe Ljødal (19), and Ariane Haga (18).

A Dramatic Morning

The fire engulfed an entire single-family home where the friends were staying. Firefighters arriving at the scene found the building fully ablaze. Two victims were found on the ground floor, and two more on the upper floor. Importantly, the building had functioning smoke detectors – neighbors heard the alarms, but no one was able to escape the flames in time.

Volunteers the Day Before

It is known that the girls had spent the previous day volunteering at the Fæbrikstad Festival in central Hamar. After the event, they gathered at one of their homes. Festival organizers paid tribute to them on social media, writing: “You did an amazing job… our thoughts are with the families.”

A City in Mourning

Hamar has fallen into silence and sorrow. A symbolic memorial – an illustration of four red hearts – was placed in the town square, where residents lay flowers and candles. Former mayor Einar Busterud, the creator of the graphic, emphasized that it represents the solidarity of the entire community.

The city’s mayor, Vigdis Stensby, spoke about the immense tragedy:

“We have lost four young lives. This is the worst thing that can happen to families and a community. We share in the grief of the victims’ loved ones.”

The fire department has also expressed deep emotion. Chief Torgeir Lysholm Dybvig called this fire one of the most difficult days in the unit’s history.

Investigation into the Tragedy

Investigators are examining the cause of the fire. It is confirmed that the smoke detectors were working, and the scene has been secured by police and experts from Kripos. Authorities are urging witnesses to share any photos or videos taken before emergency services arrived.

This is the deadliest fire in Norway since 2021, when five people died in a burning holiday cabin in Andøy.

Remembering the Victims

The death of four young women is a blow that will remain in the memory of Hamar’s residents for a long time. The local community has united in mourning, and authorities have provided psychological support to the families and close ones of the victims.
