Norway Launches Investigation Into Epstein Links. Former Prime Minister Among Those Mentioned

A major political controversy has erupted in Norway after new documents connected to convicted American financier Jeffrey Epstein revealed contacts with several Norwegian political and diplomatic figures.

The revelations have triggered a national debate and led to calls for full transparency regarding the relationships between Epstein and members of Norway’s political elite.

Authorities are now investigating whether any of these contacts could be linked to corruption, gifts, or improper influence.

What Are the “Epstein Files”?

The latest developments stem from the release of additional documents often referred to as the “Epstein files.” These materials contain millions of pages of emails, flight logs, financial records, and witness testimonies connected to Epstein’s international network.

Epstein, who was convicted of sex crimes and died in a New York jail in 2019, maintained relationships with politicians, academics, business leaders, and diplomats around the world.

When new documents surfaced in 2026, several Norwegian names appeared in the records, prompting renewed scrutiny from journalists, politicians, and the public.

Former Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland Under Investigation

One of the most prominent figures mentioned in connection with the case is Thorbjørn Jagland, a former Prime Minister of Norway and former Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

Norway’s economic crime authority Økokrim has opened an investigation into possible serious corruption (grov korrupsjon) related to Jagland’s contacts with Epstein.

Investigators are examining whether Jagland may have received benefits such as:

  • sponsored travel
  • accommodation or hospitality
  • financial support or other gifts

Authorities are also reviewing whether any such benefits could have influenced political or diplomatic decisions.

Jagland has denied any wrongdoing and stated that he will cooperate fully with investigators.

Other Norwegian Figures Linked to Epstein Network

The investigation is not limited to a single individual. Media reports have also highlighted connections involving several other Norwegian figures, including:

  • Terje Rød-Larsen, a diplomat known for his role in the Oslo peace process
  • Mona Juul, a former Norwegian ambassador
  • Børge Brende, former Norwegian foreign minister and former president of the World Economic Forum

Some of these individuals have acknowledged past contact with Epstein but deny any illegal activity.

Authorities are currently assessing whether any of these relationships involved financial benefits or conflicts of interest.

Norwegian Parliament Calls for Full Inquiry

In response to growing public pressure, the Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget) has decided to establish an independent commission to investigate the broader issue of Epstein’s connections in Norway.

The commission is expected to receive broad investigative powers, including access to official documents and the ability to summon witnesses.

Its goal will be to determine:

  • whether corruption or misconduct occurred
  • whether Norwegian institutions were exposed to external influence
  • and whether new transparency rules should be introduced for politicians and diplomats.

Lawmakers have stated that the inquiry aims to restore public trust in Norwegian political institutions.

Why the Case Matters for Norway

Norway is internationally known for its reputation for transparency and low levels of corruption. That reputation is one reason why the Epstein case has drawn such strong public attention.

Several individuals mentioned in the investigation have held high-profile international positions, including leadership roles in organizations such as the Council of Europe and institutions linked to the Nobel Peace Prize.

If misconduct were proven, it could raise serious questions about political ethics and accountability within Norway’s political elite.

For now, investigators stress that the case remains ongoing, and no final conclusions have been reached.
